Born in Melbourne’s west, David’s early life as an airforce brat was spent in too many places to remember. Soon enough though his parents left the services and settled in suburban Melbourne. His interest in photography began soon after on discovering his father’s disused Asahi Pentax SLR. Shooting with out-of-date black and white film stock, he spent many a lunch break in his high school darkroom processing and printing images of his favourite things (mainly guitars, cats and footballs) and learning that adolescence, unsupervised darkrooms and the seemingly endless supply of free chemicals make for a dangerous cocktail. Luckily he also discovered that the thoughtful use of light and shade were just as important as the choice of subject at which to point the camera. Ansel Adams and Yousuf Karsch are probably his all time favourite photographers.
He completed a BA(hons) in Politics at Monash University then embarked on a career as a writer before a happy accident led him into the streetwear end of the fashion industry. Surfing the alternative pop culture zeitgeist of the late 90s and early 00s, his clothing company’s most successful line was an extensive range of T-shirts bearing iconic logos graphically subverted with whimsy and wit to parody cultural excess and the self-satisfaction of pop culture. And to have fun. Political apathy, bland consumerism, the “pornification” of self-expression, the culture of consumption, drug use, and the self delusion of the era’s rave culture were all targets. Through this time, and by necessity, he became very well acquainted with Australian Intellectual Property law.
After a decade, David decided to pursue his love of photography and explore the vast potential that digital Photoimaging offers the creative artist. As an emerging photographer based in Melbourne his essential interest in photography revolves around seeing things in other things. He is fascinated by the reinterpretation of that which is in plain sight through combination and juxtaposition. He loves exploring this theme both in pure art terms as well as commercially.
Since completing his photography studies at RMIT in 2008 he has been steadily building his own personal folio while assisting various established Melbourne-based photographers. Apart from weddings and private commission work, his commercial client base to date includes The Alfred Foundation, Minihaha & Hiawatha, Toga Hospitality, Reality Group, Toxic, Goody Gumdrops, Reality Sunglasses, Yamaha Music, AQIS, Tina Sudell Design, The Faulty Towers Experience and The Fitzroy Football Club.
